Does moving a pc overseas decrease download speed

If the hose is empty, then the amount of time is equal to the length of the hose divided by the velocity at which water flows down the hose. If the hose is full, then the amount of time it takes for water to emerge is the length of the hose divided by the velocity at which an impulse propagates down the hose, a velocity approximately equal to the speed of sound in water.

Signals pass down the wires at the speed of light in metal, approximately half the speed of light in vacuum. The transistorized switches that perform the information processing in a conventional computer are like empty hoses: when they switch, electrons have to move from one side of the transistor to the other. The 'clock rate' of a computer is then limited by the maximum length that signals have to travel divided by the speed of light in the wires and by the size of transistors divided by the speed of electrons in silicon.

In current computers, these numbers are on the order of trillionths of a second, considerably shorter than the actual clock times of billionths of a second.

The computer can be made faster by the simple expedient of decreasing its size. Better techniques for miniaturization have been for many years, and still are, the most important approach to speeding up computers.

Wires and transistors both possess capacitance, or C--which measures their capacity to store electrons--and resistance, R--which measures the extent to which they resist the flow of current. The product of resistance and capacitance, RC, gives the characteristic time scale over which charge flows on and off a device. When the components of a computer gets smaller, R goes up and C goes down, so that making sure that every piece of a computer has the time to do what it needs to do is a tricky balancing act.

Technologies for performing this balancing act without crashing are the focus of much present research. So to make computers faster, their components must become smaller. At current rates of miniaturization, the behavior of computer components will hit the atomic scale in a few decades. At the atomic scale, the speed at which information can be processed is limited by Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. Recently researchers working on 'quantum computers' have constructed simple logical devices that store and process information on individual photons and atoms.

Atoms can be 'switched' from one electronic state to another in about 10 15 second. Whether such devices can be strung together to make computers remains to be seen, however. Each browser has its own way of doing this. In Google Chrome, click the hamburger button three horizontal lines in the top right , select Tools, and then "Clear browsing data". That could free up a couple of gigabytes. It will be much more than you would save by moving Serif's software.

Next, download and run Piriform's free CCleaner. If you use Google, do not click any Google adverts, and only use piriform. The latest file at the time of writing is ccsetup CCleaner will clear out more temporary files left behind by other programs. It's quicker than using the big green button to download it from Download. SlimCleaner will analyse all the software on your hard drive and help you to decide which programs to uninstall.

Click the Software button on the left of SlimCleaner: this will list all the programs on your PC, and give them a "community rating" based on what other users think. Ideally, all your programs will get a green rating for Good, though some will no doubt be optional or unrated.

Check any red ones and consider whether you really need them. Click on the ones you don't want, and SlimCleaner will uninstall them. This will free up some more drive space. In passing, note the tab marked Updates. Ideally, all your software should be up to date, because old versions may have known vulnerabilities. SlimCleaner will tell you about new versions and download them for you. Finally, click the SlimCleaner button labelled Disk Tools.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes. Thank you! Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 65 people found this reply helpful.

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I successfully went through both options 1 after following the instructions for adding the group policy options and 2, but with no luck.

The speed tests are showing download speeds around Mbps and uploads in the Mbps range. This problem seems to have started a couple of days ago after installing the most recent Windows OS update.

Any other suggestions? We have NorthState for Internet service and the guy came out this morning to make sure there was no problem on their end. He connected his laptop to my equipment and got upload and download speeds in the s, so it's clear the problem is somewhere in my PC Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.
